Darren McGarvey, also known by the stage name Loki, is a writer, columnist and hip hop recording artist, who has made regular media appearances as a social commentator.

Darren grew up in Pollok on the south side of Glasgow, and has lived through extreme poverty, addiction and homelessness. He is the Orwell Prize-winning author of “Poverty Safari”, which explores the anger and alienation of impoverished communities. More recently, he wrote “The Social Distance Between Us” and presented the BBC series “The State We’re In”.

In this session, Darren brings his own perspective, insight and analysis – along with humour and humanity – on the complex topics of poverty and power. He will share his views on how to build a fairer housing system and support some of the most challenged communities in the UK.
