I see offsite construction as a pivotal tool that could aid us in reaching our ambitious goal of building 300,000 new homes annually. It offers considerable advantages such as speed, quality control, and cost efficiency, making it a worthy consideration in our toolkit.
Despite these benefits, offsite construction isn’t a panacea. Challenges exist, including a disconnect between offsite specialists and the broader construction process, often leading to costly redesigns. To mitigate this, we should consider integrating these specialists early in the planning stages, fostering efficiency and reducing unnecessary costs.
Offsite construction is a step forward, an evolution of traditional methods that offers new opportunities in our current landscape. It doesn’t provide all the answers, but it’s an important part of the solution. Enhancing our approach with true partnerships, built on trust and shared goals, can foster a more collaborative and efficient process.
As we strive towards our goal of 300,000 new homes, offsite construction, could play a vital role in transforming our construction landscape to be more resilient, efficient, and sustainable.
I’m looking forward to spreading this message at Housing 2023 and stepping into the conversation on some of the biggest issues facing housing.
